SISTER MARY CARMEN TAMMARO,
SDS
January 25, 1928
† June 27,
2006
Theresa Tammaro was born January 25, 1928 in
Norristown, Pennsylvania, archdiocese of
Philadelphia. She was the daughter of Joseph and
Josephine (DelVeschio) Tammaro. She entered the
Congregation January 31, 1948 in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, and was invested there August 12,
1949, receiving Mary Carmen as her religious
name. She took her first vows January 6, 1951
and her perpetual vows January 6, 1957, both at
St. Mary’s Convent, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Sister Mary Carmen studied at St. Louis
University and also received a certificate in
Hospital Office Organization from Bryant and
Stratton Business College, Milwaukee.
Besides serving as teacher for several years
in elementary schools in Wisconsin and Maryland,
Sister Mary Carmen also did office work and
accounting in the province finance office and at
Divine Savior Hospital, Portage, Wisconsin. She
served as coordinator for our elderly Sisters at
the St. Mary’s Community, 1977-1980 and as
coordinator of the St. Anne’s Community from
1994 -1997. Beginning in 2000 until five months
before her death, Sister Mary Carmen served as
receptionist at the administrative office of the
province at Divine Savior Community House,
Milwaukee.
One of Sister Mary Carmen’s greatest joys was
to provide a festive and often colorful
environment for feast days in the community.
During her years of teaching she was seen as
very creative and fully dedicated to her work
with the children. In her years as receptionist
at the Community House, she conscientiously
organized the weekly mailing of our Salvatorian
UPDATE bulletin to the Sisters and the Lay
Salvatorians.
Over the years Sister Mary Carmen struggled
with multiple health problems. In December of
2005, she visited her family in Pennsylvania. In
the following months, she was hospitalized a
number of times and on May 25, 2006, moved to
St. Anne’s Salvatorian Campus. On Sunday June
25, 2006, she developed congestive heart failure
and pneumonia. She was alert and at peace with
her decision not to return to the hospital. The
Sisters kept vigil with her and she died
peacefully in the early morning hours of June
27, 2006.
May she now rejoice forever with our loving
and provident God.
Sister Mary Carmen is survived by her
sisters, Ann Malantonio and Mary Nacarelli; two
sisters-in-law, Ellen Tammaro and Mary Tammaro;
and one brother-in-law, Michael Malantonio.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
7:00 pm on July 5, 2006 at St. Anne’s
Salvatorian Campus Chapel, Milwaukee, WI with
visitation beginning at 4:30 pm. Burial will be
at Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee, WI.
