Sister Georgene Faust, SDS - Reflection on Religious Life

In Arizona, the Sisters of the Divine Savior are living the charism of their founders, "Sharing the Good News of the Savior by All Ways and Means". We minister as: an attorney at the Diocese of Phoenix; meeting the adult literacy needs of those who have special needs; as a head nurse in hospice management in Tucson; caring for premature babies in hospitals as well as being a support to their parents; jails and prisons as well as immigration detainees in the Florence area are offered support on a daily basis.

Life as a woman religious today has a common feature with that of the rest of society. There is a common element and that is CHANGE.

Sister Georgene Faust, SDS, right, and a colleague serve in adult education.

I believe that women religious throughout the centuries has been a very stable yet powerful influence for change within the Church as well as in society.

The history of women's religious life shows this so clearly. When critical needs arose within society, the women religious were the first to respond in very creative ways, living the charism of their founders, which often made the impossible, possible. Today many lay people have internalized these stable principles that lead to changes based on the solid values needed in the Church and society today.

Women religious today , as in the past, do not take center stage but  collaborate and network with many other organizations within the Church and society.  Their power for change may not always be obvious yet powerful never the less.

Women religious have developed a broad base in today's world. When they see a need to strengthen Christian values, they use all ways and means to do so. This is clearly shown in the way women religious are involved and committed. Religious are collaborating and networking within traditional fields such as teaching, nursing, parish and social work as well as in the less traditional areas.
